No Hard Feelings for Billionaires

You’d think if you spent millions of dollars funding a dishonest campaign to destroy a Presidential candidate and then 4 years later the party that nominated that same candidate controlled both Congress and the Presidency you’d have a hard time getting meetings at that party.

But not so if you’re T. Boone Pickens and the party is the Democratic Party. For the last 2 years T. Boone Pickens has meet with pretty much every member of the Democratic party, not sure about Kerry, and as far as I know the whole issue of the funding the Swift Boat campaign never came up until yesterday when Al Franken reportedly gave Pickens as earful.

According to a source, the wealthy oil and gas magnate and author of “The First Billion Is the Hardest” stepped up to introduce himself to Franken in a room just off the Senate Floor after the lunch ended.

Franken, who was seated talking to someone else, did not stand when Pickens said hello. Instead, Franken began to berate him about the billionaire’s financing of the Swift Boat ads in 2004.

Obviously I wouldn’t suggest anybody starting keeping an enemies list as Richard Nixon and Karl Rove did for Bush, but the swift boat campaign is neither ancient history nor a small slight.

The signal being sent here is pretty simple: We’ll meet with anybody with money, even they’ve dumped their money into hit jobs directed against our presidential candidates. That’s just not a good policy.
